Aulani isn’t just a resort, it’s a destination in itself. Located on the shores of Ko Olina in O‘ahu, Aulani invites guests to relax, explore, and immerse themselves in authentic Hawaiian culture without ever leaving the property. Whether you’re a family with young kids, a couple looking for a romantic escape, or a solo traveler ready for some rejuvenation, Aulani has more than enough to fill your days with magic. Here’s everything we experienced and loved during our unforgettable stay.

Water Wonderland: Pools, Lazy Rivers & Lagoon Life

Let’s just say it: the lazy river at Aulani is a problem—because once you get in, you’ll never want to leave. It winds through lush greenery, bridges, and waterfalls in a perfect loop of floating serenity. In addition to the lazy river, Aulani boasts:

We even had a (slightly chaotic) paddleboard and snorkeling adventure in the lagoon that included a lost GoPro, a borrowed snorkel set, and an unexpected community search party—including a guy from New Zealand. Spoiler alert: we got the GoPro back!

Snorkeling at Rainbow Reef

If ocean snorkeling seems a bit intimidating, Rainbow Reef is the perfect controlled environment. It’s a saltwater lagoon teeming with tropical fish, right in the center of the resort. You get your snorkel gear for the entire day, so you can go in and out as much as you want. It’s perfect for kids, first-time snorkelers, or anyone wanting to swim safely with colorful marine life.

Pro tip: You’ll feel like the fish are watching you as guests on the outside peer into the underwater viewing area. Yep, you’re the star of the aquarium now.

Fitness & Wellness: The Aulani Gym and Spa

Let’s talk about the gym. Aulani’s gym wins hands down compared to other DVC resort gyms (even the fancy ones in California). It’s spacious, well-equipped, and includes a Smith machine—a rare find at most resorts. There are also free weights, cardio machines, and more.

Right next door is Laniwai Spa, which we sadly didn’t get to visit—but word on the beach is it’s phenomenal. So if you can snag a reservation, don’t hesitate.

Family Fun at Aunty’s Beach House & Community Center

If you have little ones, Aunty’s Beach House is the place to be. While we didn’t get to fully experience it, it’s known for its immersive, Disney-style cultural and creative programming for kids—and even some activities that adults can join too.

At the Community Center, we got to make our own Mickey ears using faux flowers and hot glue (which may or may not have survived the trip home). Be sure to reserve ahead of time in the Aulani app—it fills up quickly.

Evening Magic: Fire Pit Storytelling & Stargazing

After the sun sets, Aulani becomes even more magical. Our favorite experience? The Fire Pit Storytelling. A charismatic local cast member tells ancient Hawaiian legends under the stars, right next to the beach. It’s free, authentic, and completely captivating—kids and adults alike were hooked.

Other nighttime activities include stargazing sessions with multiple time slots and minimal wait times.

Dining & Drinks You’ll Dream About Later

From casual poolside bites to tropical cocktails, Aulani’s food scene does not disappoint. Some of our top picks:

Best of all, the drinks and food at Aulani are actually different than the standard offerings at most other DVC resorts. You’ll find unique Hawaiian twists on classics, and everything tasted fresh and delicious.

Character Sightings & The Aulani App

Aulani has plenty of Disney character meet-and-greets—but without the long Florida-style lines. Expect to see Mickey, Minnie, Moana, and more throughout the day.

Make sure to download the Aulani app, which is separate from the My Disney Experience app. It’s essential for booking activities like the ear workshop or checking the character schedule.

Off-Property Adventures Worth the Drive

If you want to venture out, here are three highlights from our trip:

  1. Waimea Falls – A gorgeous hike (on a paved path!) with cultural exhibits, lush jungle scenery, and a waterfall you can swim in.
  2. North Shore Food Trucks – Get your seafood fix with an ocean view. Try the ahi burrito. Thank us later.
  3. Dole Plantation – Yes, the real Dole Whip lives here. Enjoy the massive pineapple maze, the charming train tour, and learn everything about pineapples—from crown to core.

Even as a self-proclaimed pineapple hater, one of us still had a blast.

Relaxation is the Main Event

The real magic of Aulani might just be how it encourages you to slow down. One of our favorite memories was simply sitting in waist-deep pool water with a Kindle, soaking up the sun while a nearby kid accidentally splashed us and immediately apologized. That’s the vibe: chill, magical, and family-friendly.

Final Thoughts: Aulani Ranks #1

We’ve been to a lot of DVC resorts, and Aulani is now officially our favorite. It offers that rare mix of Disney magic, cultural authenticity, and pure island paradise. Whether you’re planning your first trip or your tenth, it’s worth every point, mile, and minute it takes to get there.

So until next time… Aloha!
